Coach Norman James

Norman James

In 1928, Coach Norman James was born to Joe and Juanita James in Darlington, Missouri.

From 1934 to 1942, he attended Carmack grades 1 - 8.

From 1942 - 1946, he attended the Albany, Missouri High School where he obtained his high school diploma.

From 1946 - 1950, he attended Northwest Missouri State College where obtained his Bachelor degree.

From 1950 - 1952, Coach James served in the Armed Forces of the United States.

From 1959 - 1962, he attended Central Missouri State University where obtained his Masters degree.

1950 - 1955 Assistant Football and Head Track Coach at Sedalia Smith-Cotton High School.

1956 - 1957 Assistant Football Coach at William Chrisman High School.

1958 - 1963 Head Football Coach at William Chrisman High School. Won the Pony Express Conference Title 3 times.

During the period of 1956 through 1963, in addition to coaching, Coach James at various times taught history, physical education, drivers' education.

1964 - 1983 Independence School District Athletic Director.

1983 - 1990 Crop adjuster for the Great American Insurance Company.

Served 12 years as Executive Secretary for the Suburban Conference.

Why Independence School District? Coach James enjoys living here.

The football field at William Chrisman is named in his honor.

James' first wife died in 1994. He remarried in 2000 to Ruby Stewart.

For his post retirement social work, Coach James participates in the Independence Rotary Club activities.

Coach James has a lot of players he remembers with pride. Special mention is deserved by his All American, Carl Evans, and Joe Keeton who returned to Chrisman as Head Football Coach, and Terry Keeton who became a football coach as well. There are too many others to name here.

Regarding Harry S. Truman, Coach says, "A fine man and President."

On the subject of how teaching has changed, Coach James says,"Students change more than teaching . Everyone needs to adjust to the changing times.
