HISTORY OF THE FIRST FOOTBALL TEAM
The first football team for Independence High School (former name of William Chrisman High School) was made up of the following players. First Team James Dickinson, Thornton Chiles, Earle Gibson, Proctor Thomson, Lee Grinter, Ben Vittum, Fred Carter, Spurgeon Campbell, Morton Chiles (Captain), Alexander McCoy, Second Team Howard Rhodes, E. C. Robinson, C.C. Bundschu, Roger Sermon (was be a mayor of Independence in the 1950s), Matthew Paxton, Hershel Smith, Harry Graves, Paul White (Captain), J. D. Robinson, Bernard Casebolt, Charles McCoy, and Forrest (Phog) Allen (Coach). They played the following teams. Buckner, Central, First National Bank of Kansas City, West End, Woodland, Invincibles, and Third Central of Kansas City. None of these schools are in existences today, 100 years later.

Independence High School winner because Buckner forfeited

Independence High School 5, Woodland of Kansas City 0

Independence High School 6, Third Central of Kansas City 5
