Last week, while traveling to Chicago on business, I noticed a Marine sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together.
After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who'd been invited to sit in First Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home.
No, he responded.
Heading out I asked?
No. I'm escorting a soldier home.
Going to pick him up?
No. He is with me right now. He was killed in Iraq , I'm taking him home to his family.
The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honor for him. He told me that, although he didn't know the soldier, he had delivered the news of his passing to the soldier's family and felt as if he knew them after many conversations in so few days.
I turned back to him, extended my hand, and said, Thank you. Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do.
Upon landing in Chicago the pilot stopped short of the gate and made the following announcement over the intercom.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to note that we have had the honor of having Sergeant Steeley of the United States Marine Corps join us on this flight He is escorting a fallen comrade back home to his family. I ask that you please remain in your seats when we open the forward door to allow Sergeant Steeley to deplane and receive his fellow soldier. We will then turn off the seat belt sign."
Without a sound, all went as requested. I noticed the sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane, and his action made me realize that I am proud to be an American.
So here's a public Thank You to our military Men and Women for what you do so we can live the way we do.
Red Fridays.
Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority." We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing.
Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday -- and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that ... Every red-blooded American who supports our men and women a far, will wear something red.
By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, coworkers, friends, and family, it will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on.
The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is. "We need your support and your prayers." Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example, and wear something red every Friday.

In 1919, when flu killed 40 million people, there was a doctor who visited the local farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu. Many of the area farmers and their families had contracted the flu and many died.
When the doctor came upon one farm, he was very surprised to find everyone there was very healthy. The doctor asked the farmer if there was anything special he was doing that was different or unusual. The wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in each of the rooms of the home, (probably only two
or three rooms back then).
The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions they had used to place it under his microscope. She gave him one.
When he cut up one of those used onions and placed the slice under his microscope, he found the flu virus in the onion. It had apparently absorbed the bacteria, thereby keeping the family healthy.
I heard this story from my hairdresser in AZ. She said that several
years ago many of her employees were coming down with the flu and so
were many of her customers. The next year she placed several bowls
with onions around in her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must work.. (And no, she is not in the onion business.)
The point of the story is: buy some onions and without removing the
dried outside layer, place them in bowls around your home.
If you work at a desk in an office, place one or two unpeeled onions in your office where no one will care, under your desk, or even on top of your desk somewhere. Try it and see what happens.
We did it last year and we never got the flu.
If this helps you and your loved ones from getting sick, all the better. If you do get the flu, it just might be a milder case.
What have you to lose? Just a few bucks on onions!
Now there is a P.S. to this, for I sent it to a friend in Oregon who regularly contributes material to me on health issues. She replied with this most interesting experience about onions:
Weldon, Thanks for the reminder. I don't know about the farmer story, but, I do know that when I contracted pneumonia, I was very
ill. I came across an article that said to cut both ends off a large onion; force a fork into one end; and then place the fork into an empty jar with the onion resting on the opening of the jar; and, place the jar next to the sick patient overnight. It said the onion would be black in the morning from absorbing the germs and bad bacteria. Sure enough. It happened just like that...the onion was a mess and I began to feel better.
Another thing I read in the article was that onions and garlic placed
around the room saved many from the black plague years ago.
They have powerful antibacterial, antiseptic properties.
Thanks for this article. It brought back memories of when my
oldest son used to get colds all the time when he was little.
This lady told me to cut an onion and rub it on his chest.
The onion turned very black and my son soon felt better.
Also, there was a young woman where I grew up who used to
cut garlic and onion, put it in a sock, and pin it to her little girl's undershirt. At the time I thought it was a terrible thing to do to a child, having her walk around smelling like onions and garlic. I figured she would grow up and be single for the rest of her life because of any nicknames others might have given her or
trauma from having to wear such a thing around all the time.
But, I guess she just wanted to keep her little girl healthy

Crucial
Because of recent abductions In daylight hours, refresh yourself
of these things to do in an emergency situation...
This is for you, and for you to share with your wife, your children,
everyone you know.
After reading these 10 crucial tips, forward them to someone you care about. It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in.
1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point
on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!
2.. Learned this from a tourist guide. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you.... Chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy.. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go.
AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE..
If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF,
Repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat They will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.
5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat
B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle,
and the passenger side... If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT!)
7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target)
4 in 100 times; and even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, Preferably in a zig -zag pattern!
8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often
asked 'for help' into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
9. Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard
a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird.. The police told her 'Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door..' The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over.
The policeman said, 'We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.' He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that
they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night
10. Water scam! If you wake up in the middle of the night to hear all your taps outside running or what you think is a burst pipe, DO NOT GO OUT TO INVESTIGATE! These people turn on all your outside taps full ball so that you will go out to investigate and then attack.
Stay alert, keep safe, and look out for your neighbors!
Please pass this on and remember it during your holiday shopping!
Pow Wow V turned out wonderful - as always. Thank you Ron and Barb!
That's all for now,
Cecil

I am including this location discussion so that YOU can add, delete, and let your favorite Reunion Planning Committee Member know where YOU want to have the 45th. Doris Club (816 833-0258), Jeannie Hall (816 836-2786), Marilyn Holsworth (816 796-8995), Bob Bergin (816 436-4058), Randy Halsey (816 225-8685) and Jimmy Pescetto (816 461-1477)are Marilyn's offical members.
Right now, it looks like Marilyn is going to start having reunion planning meetings beginning in January 2010. The next all class get-together is the Saturday December 12 holiday party at Marilyns.
1. On Halloween; De, Thacker, Webb, Jimmy, Marilyn, Jeannie, myself and Randy all had a chance to check out Randy's warehouse as a possible location for the 45th reunion. So, we have at least one option already available - and thank you, Randy for a great halloween party with DJ and pinata, food, maze to the bathrooms, birthday party, costumes (Randy came as Pimp Daddy) and just tons of fun.
2. Benjamin Stables is a turn key - pay 'em - then show up and enjoy your evening.
3. Tom Corum showed us Hanger 9 down at old Municipal airport in KCMO. There you can party, tour the museum with planes, beverages are allowed, and there is more than adequate space.
4. Marilyn of course would like to have Bobby Simkins involved some way or other. Bobby is the Elvis Tribute artist we have discussed and followed about. Maybe at the picnic?
5. The Masonic Lodge on Pleasant - south a couple blocks from Memorial Building is renting its large room - they say 200 people - on Nov 14 for a Bobby concert. That is another place we have not been.
6. Other classes have held their reunions at a winery in Lee's Summit/Lone Jack area.
7. Robie Mathews can arrange tours of William Chrisman HS and her class, 67, used the WCHS choir room for their last reunion.
8. Sermon Center
9. VFW on 24 Hwy
10. VFW in Sugar Creek
11. Plus, we can go back to any of our former locations. The new hotel out by Independence Center is a popular place, but we could not keep the cost at $60/couple as most classes seem to be charging $100 or more per couple for reunions there.
