Pow Wow V date is set -- October 24th.

Please keep your schedule open for that night of friendship, fun and Indian stories. Ron would appreciate an RSVP phone call to get an idea on food ordering - (816) 900-2007. If you have hit upon hard times - we car pool and Marilyn says that nasty old black donation hat (She calls it tacky cheap.) had enough money in it after the picnic to guarantee the pre-purchase of Pow Wow fixins. That stupid ole' black hat will show up at Pow Wow as well. Seems a sinister plot to keep these events rolling without Marilyn and Jimmy and Ron totally footing the bill out of their pockets.

For those who have never seen or heard Ron tell one of his Indian stories -- on May 30, 2009, Ron McMillian made a demo video of his Indian Story Telling. You can check it out on Utube. Maybe share it with anyone you think might want to attend one of Ron's Pow Wows or better yet - if you know a school teacher who might want Ron to come to their school - set up his tee pee and tell stories to the kids - share it with them. He does not over charge the schools. Utube info is below. Go to: www.youtube.com

Added by Donna Middleton Staley: We go way back with Pam and her family. Pam's dad, Kenny, got Jim his first job. Also, Jim and Pam were square dance partners and danced in one of the few exhibition squares in the KC area. Ahhh...the good old days!!!!

Cecil, I'm getting to point that I hate to hear from you. These notices of another classmate dying is getting tough to take. John was such a great talent. Like you I watched three fastballs go by me at 90+. I didn't stand a chance. To think I haven't seen or talked to him in over 40 years is in itself amazing. I hope I can get to the class picnic this year. I was hoping to retire but last fall erased that thought. I look forward to seeing you and the others. Take care, Dave Poteet

Subject: Mike and Kay Kassen--40th Anniversary

We are without email addresses for many of Mom and Dad's friends--can't check their email address book without tipping them off. We would appreciate your help.
Thanks.
-Bret
--- Forwarded message from Bret R. Kassen 01 ---
July 5, 2009 marks Mike and Kay Kassen's 40th Wedding Anniversary. We (their proud kids and kids-in-law: Wes and Sarah, Bret and Staci, and Carly and Jim) write to you because you are an important person in their lives. Most of you have known Mike and Kay for many years, and we are certain that all of you have fond memories of this special pair. In celebration of their anniversary, we invite you to reply to this email with a remembrance of Mike and Kay.
We will compile your message, along with those of other family and friends, into an album that Mom and Dad will surely treasure for many years. Your message can be as brief or as lengthy as you wish, and we welcome any thoughts you'd like to share, e.g., a sentimental note, a funny or embarrassing story, old nicknames, an inside joke, your first impression of them, a memory of their early years together, something you learned from them, what they mean to you now, etc. Whether lighthearted, serious, or a little of both, your remembrance--within a collection of remembrances from loved ones--will give Mom and Dad a heartwarming thrill and enduring reminder of the people and moments that have shaped their lives.

Please forgive us for this late notice, but we ask that you please send your remembrances to this email address (bkassen@alum.dartmouth.org) by Tuesday, June 30, so that we have time to prepare the album. Of course, we hope to surprise Mom and Dad with this gift, so please do not mention it to them. If you have any questions, or prefer to deliver your message over the phone, please call Bret at 913-638-3334. Thank you.
-The Kassen Kids

Some thoughts not appropriate to send to the kids but should be Okay for Mike and Kay:

Marilyn remembered seeing Mike Kassen and his Dad up at the Memorial Building. She thinks Mike was playing basketball. Mike's Dad was bald then and Marilyn got it on her mind that Mike would be the same.

Thacker remembered Mike's Dad as the diligent postman who never failed to deliver the goods.

Marilyn remembered all the girls having this terrible crush on Mike.

When I was going through my tiny little mind trying to recall the first time I ever saw these two as a couple, seems like it was when we were playing volley ball at a get-together. But that is so lame.

We waited until the 5th of July to send out this e-mail so we wouldn't mess up the kids' surprise - that is over and done. If you want to send them your congratulations on 40 years of marriage, mkassen@aol.com.

Way to go Mike and Kay! Congratulations and may you two enjoy many more happy years together.

----------- Class Picnic ------------

Wouldn't you know it - it rained up past 4:30 and looked like it was set in for the night. Delbert, Marilyn's Brother, set up a really cool and very large screened gazebo tent (25 people can eat under it) so the food was out of the rain and inside netting.

With the threat of continuing rain, we set up additional canopy tents and just as we finished setting up the second one - it quit raining and turned into the perfect evening.

Estimated attendance was between 48 and 52 Classmates and spouses.
Food was exceptionally delicious and gone in a heart beat - only thing left was commercially purchased baked beans and well you know how it is in a group situation. So, not unhappy the beans were left over.

More than a few classmates took the informal tour - yes, that is right as Marilyn has tons of flower gardens as a result of her Garden Club membership - and it was a thrill to argue over which was which and listen to those who have one at their place. Everything was in tip top shape with Jeannie helping to pull weeds and Jimmy doing the weed eating and of course Marilyn doing all the rest of the labor of love.

One highlight of the evening was a group visit to see Danny Holman's hall tree which he skillfully took from a box full of parts and pieces and made it into one absolutely gorgeous furniture piece.

With the rain, no one brought their hotrods, but Terry Whittell had a few flyers on the car show he runs every year - I think he said this was the 9th year he had been in-charge.

Kenny Van Tuyls' new role as a speaker came into play as most all problems can be solved.

Just as I was hitting on Eloise Osburn - my personal practice since the seventh grade - she came up with the perfect "Take a hike line." Turns out that she and Danny Holman won the seventh grade dance contest in the old Memorial Building. With Danny standing there - my line of crap was over. But, Danny being the kind heart he is jumped right into the story out of his past about how one night when he was twisting away on a concrete patio, he got so carried away that he wore a hole clear through the bottom of his shoe.

And, once that confession was out, Terry White Marshal jumped in and let all know the real reason she did not make our 10 year reunion. Turns out that Terry was in a Buckner parade with little ones that needed supervision to go from the start to the finish. Well, Terry did her best to make that happen and in so doing wore a hole clear through her tennies blistering her foot so badly that she could not walk. And, now my friends, you know the rest of the story why Terry White stayed home to nurse a blister rather than come to our 10th reunion.

Jerry Vance couldn't make the picnic, but boy was he a hero. Seems Marilyn worked some kind of deal with Jerry that she stores his smudge pots for him and Jerry lets her use them at our picnics. Jimmy made the mad dash to the store to get citronela lamp oil and with that marvelous fluid in Jerry's smudge pots - the mosquitos were kept away letting us all enjoy the evening. Thank you Jerry!

Larry Withrow gave us a giggle at the picnic. For about a decade, Larry did the horse tours on the Plaza. When asked, Larry went right into the Plaza Guided Tour speech. This fountain, and that and J.C. Nichols, etc. etc. -- brilliant, he can remember almost all of the entire tour.

At the day after follow up party at Mailyn's - I thought I had heard it all. Wrong. When "Basketball Head" told us how LeRoy Davies (sp?) placed that tag line on him - well it has to be shared. Seems like ole' LeRoy has a reputation of harassing folks. So, when "Basketball Head" knew he was about to go visit LeRoy, he just up and began bragging about this and that and how ole' LeRoy wouldn't so much as get in a tiny little personal dig let alone intimidate him. So, off to visit ole' LeRoy and LeRoy was in a good mood and things went acording to plan until it came time to leave LeRoy's place. Just as they were leaving ole' LeRoy said something like I'll see you "Basketball Head" and low and behold the name stuck. Confession and story by Terry Whittle.

Marilyn's two most favorite stories from the picnic:
1.) One day Terry Whittle and a buddy wanted to go bike riding and Terry couldn't find his helmit. Terry wears a 2X helmit and they finally ran across one. Seems the one they found was missing the top pad. Anyway, down the highway they go and with the wind blowing in their faces just enough pressure came into Terry's helmit to sort of push up where the pad wasn't. The helmit lifted up and then something strange happened - the air began to twist the helmit around until Terry was blowing down the Interstate as a one eyed Joe with the other eye covered when the helmit turned about his head. Terry said he was sure glad to stop at the top of the off ramp without having hit anything.
2.) Yet another bike story made Marilyn's list -- seems Kenny Van Tuyl and LaCinda enjoy riding their Harley. You know Kenny, he has to keep his image going and so when he rides to let those who can see him know he is a true Harley type - Ken puts on those fake tattoos. Enough said - well not quite, Kenny wouldn't tell where LaCinda wore her fake tattoo. More to follow.

-------------- Shakespeare - The Merry Wives of Windsor ---------

Our attendance was smaller this year than last as many just did not want to be out in the near 100 degree temperature. At the second Marilyn Class event within a week, about 7:00 pm a cold front pushed through and an almost perfect evening was enjoyed(two little sprinkle showers and nothing more.) This was a Shakespeare comedy and many a laugh was had which made the trip worthwhile. Got those great seats in the middle again.

This year, no one came thinking buying food there was a good idea. This year there was lots of fruit to include a ton of grapes, several kinds of cheese, crackers, veggies, dips, chips, wine, water for us old folks, candy and Marilyn whipped up a right tasty egg salad which made wonderful finger sandwiches. No one went home hungry - the show was great - and who knows, maybe next year will be better attended.

---------------------- Marilyn Moore ----------

wants us to do something in Kansas, any ideas? Last year Terry Thacker sponsored the Class trip to the Renaissance Festival in Kansas. Other than that, she may have a point.

------------------------------ Paul Paris --------------------------

I have located one of our missing -- Don Reynolds. In respect for his family, I have agreed to only disclose that he has been located, and is in very poor health. He is currently residing in a nursing home.

------------------------------- Chuck Zuvers -------------------

Thank you, Chuck Zuvers, for helping Diane Butcher sign up on our e-mail list.

------------------- River Run Youth Benefit -----------------

For nine years now Terry Whittle has been in charge of the annual River Run Youth Benefit Independence Midtown Optimist Club Car Show and bike Show. This year it was held on June 27th, 2009. Proceeds benefit Afton Jack's Medical Needs & The Youth Of Our Community.

----------------------- Links Scholarship Run ---------------

Van Horn is one of the three schools now supported by the LINKS 5k run. Robie Mathews, Chrisman's Class Reunion Coordinator, is the point of contact for Alumni Volunteers. If you want to be a part of this scholarship fund raiser next year - contact Robie. Me, I sort of missed Tom Mueller this year. My old volunteer station was near the Waldo area and Tom used to come by and share a bit of how his local newsletter was going.

--------- July 18 and 19, 2009 - Shine Program -----------------

Last year's successful volunteer effort to help clean up the former Kansas City School District schools that became part of the Independence School District has been expanded this year to include William Chrisman High School. Please visit the web site www.WilliamChrismanHighSchool.com for more details. All are welcome to help clean and paint, etc.

-- Goal - Everyone Get Two More Classmates on this e-mail list --

Please get a couple of your classmates to sign up for our e-mail list. We really need to save here and there to keep the cost of the next reunion within our normal range. So, it's your money too. Sign them up and we can save a ton of postage. If they won't sign up, please forward them a copy of this e-mail. That is what Patty Selvy does and we thank her for that.

See you at Pow Wow V!
Cecil
