Walter Richard Agee, D.O., lifelong resident of Independence, Mo., died Monday, March 3, 2008, at the Kansas City Hospice House. He was 91.
Born on Feb. 13, 1917, in Independence, he graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1935. He attended the University of Missouri, received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Kansas City College of Osteopathy and Surgery in 1941, and interned at Lakeside Hospital in Kansas City.
After practicing medicine in Lexington, Mo., Dr. Agee joined the Independence practice of his father, Dr. Purl M. Agee in 1943. He remained in private practice in Independence until 1973 when he joined the faculty of the University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine (now Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences).
He served the university as Assistant Professor of Family Osteopathic Medicine, Clinical Assistant Professor, and member of the student admissions committee until his retirement in 1986.
He was an enthusiast of Big Band jazz, Missouri Tiger football, world travel, Canadian fishing, and spending time with family and friends.
In 1942, Dr. Agee married Emma Jeanne Etzenhauser of Independence, who survives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Purl M. and Ada Winn Agee; two sisters, Helen (Mrs. Wilburn E. Moore) of New Orleans and Mary (Mrs. Roy R. Shore) of Independence; and a son, Walter Richard Agee Jr., of Independence. He is also survived by a son, Anthony Agee, Kansas City, Mo.; three daughters, Elizabeth (Mrs. James A. Cogswell), Columbia, Mo., Emily Golson (Mrs. Drue Jennings), Prairie Village, Kan., and Julia (Mrs. Craig Mahurin), Leawood, Kan.; 12 grandchildren, Emily and Thomas Cogswell, Anthony, Brooke, Parker and Timothy Agee, Grant, Elizabeth and Miles Golson, and Cam, Spencer and Laura Mahurin; niece, Beverly Moore (Mrs. Douglas Lore), New Orleans; and one great-grandchild. Private family services.
