Mr. McConnell proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the South Pacific.
Mac was a member of the Village Heights Community of Christ Congregation.
He retired from the General Motors Fairfax plant in 1980 after 27 years of service.Mac loved his grandchildren dearly.
He was a member of the Laurel Club and enjoyed working in his yard and around the house in his spare time.Mr. McConnell is survived by his son D. Larry McConnell and wife Diane, daughter Sandra Dean and husband Gary; grandchildren Jeffrey and Kristi McConnell, Douglas and Tara McConnell, Kelli and Dustin Kurle, Matthew Dean; great-grandchildren Halle, Levi and Zamira McConnell; brother Durward “Mac” McConnell and wife Eunice; and a host of nieces, nephews and special friends.
Mac was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Betty McConnell in 2000 and an infant son Wilburn E. McConnell, Jr.
Sammy and Linda (Meyers) Bishop came to the visitation to show respect to "Mac" for all of his Boy Scout work at Liberty Street Congregation. Turned out that there was even more to these three families' relationship, Linda's Father had baptized Larry.
Elma Deen Stark (sp?) brought a touch of the old neighborhood into the discussions. She certainly appreciated "Mac's" dedication and service and expressed how "Mac" was now on the other side learning "the right way" while we still struggle on this side to just understand."
While talking about old Benton Grade School, the conversation slipped over to some students whom Sammy and Linda square danced with. Which caused Larry to reveal his personal story of how something in Fort Scott, Kansas lead him to taking square dancing lessons. But, that is a story for Larry to share with all at a future Class of 1965 gathering.
Several of the Class of 1965 Reunion Planning Committee members attended the visitation and Larry expressed his gratitude for that. This had been a busy week, and Larry was dealing with the Hospice folks and felt bad that he could not attend Bobby Bergin's Mother's visitation. It was a tough week for the Benton Grade School members of the Class of 1965.
We all wish Larry the best and send our condolences for his loss of his mentor and friend, "Mac."
