Save the date for the 65th WCHS Class of 1944 Reunion! Mark your calendar and plan to be there. Here are some ideas to get you thinking and anticipating the weekend. You will receive the official invitation in August with some of the possible events we're considering:
FRIDAY, Oct. 23rd Mid-Day: Veterans Courtyard and the Truman Memorial Building
Honor veterans and reminisce about the activities we enjoyed at the Memorial Building. This event may include placing flowers or a wreath at the memorial wall, having lunch in a reserved room in the Memorial Building, visiting the Veterans' Hall, viewing video recordings of Independence veterans, and touring the auditorium with the chance to sit in a "Class of 44" seat (we'll have the opportunity to purchase a seat). See the enclosed brochure for information about the renovated building and the Independence's efforts to honor veterans. (Brochure enclosed in original mailing.)
FRIDAY, Oct. 23rd Evening: WCHS Football
Enjoy a tail gate (hot dogs and cocoa) and a night of football as we watch the William Chrisman High School Bears play Fort Osage.
SATURDAY, Oct. 24th Morning: Reunion Coffee
A William Chrisman Alumni Reunion Coffee (all classes over 50 years) at the Palmer Senior Center will likely be hosted by our class and sponsored by the Independence Parks and Recreation Department.
SATURDAY, Oct. 24th Evening: Reception with Dinner
This will be a chance to relax, visit, and have a good meal (perhaps held at Drumm Farm Golf Club).
SUNDAY, Oct. 25th Mid-Morning: Champagne Brunch
Held at V's or a similar restaurant, we'll gather once more to enjoy each others' company and toast the Class of 1944.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
- Stay healthy.
- Mark your calendar to plan to attend, encouraging others to attend also.
- Consider a donation to share the expenses of down-payments, mailings, memorial flowers, and/or an auditiorium seat. Donations can be accepted any time. Send to the address below, please.
- Search through your high school photos for any showing activities that took place in the Truman Memorial Building. Please mail or email your photos to the committee. (Be sure to write your name on mailed photos as they'll be returned.) These will be used as permanent archives of the building. Send soon as they'll possibly be displayed when we visit the building during the reunion.
- Take a look at the enclosed brochure on the Truman Memorial Building and the Veterans Hall. It is proudly dedicated to Independence residents who have given military service. Additionally, it is the home of the Veterans' Video Project, which provides an opportunity for local veterans to videotape and preserve significant memories of their military service experiences for family members and the Library of Congress Archives. If you are a veteran and have not done so, arrange for an interview by calling 816-325-7843.
- If you are not able to attend, please think of us on this weekend and know that each of you will be in our stories and prayers.
We look forward to seeing each of you,
Your Reunion Committee
