Symptoms of depression can be easy to miss, at least initially. After about a week of constant symptoms, it should be fairly clear that the sufferer is not in a "funk," but is feeling depressed.
What is Depression?
Depression is an overwhelming feeling of sadness and hopelessness that the depression sufferer just can't take. Sometimes it's triggered by a sad event, such as a death in the family or a lost job. The person who goes through one of these traumatic experiences may start questioning the meaning of life. They also might start feeling worthless, especially if they've just lost their job. Sometimes, no one event triggers depression. A person who frequently suffers from depression may just get fall into a depression.
Other people get depressed when they don't see enough sun. This is called seasonal depression and isn't as severe as clinical depression. This type of depression can be treated by sitting under a sunlamp for 15 minutes a day.
So What are the Symptoms?
Symptoms vary. However, they usually start with sadness. The depressed person feels sad and usually can't explain why. They might also start withdrawing from their family and friends, declining offers to socialize and hang out. These two symptoms are harder to notice. Sometimes the depressed person as well as their family can chalk these symptoms up to tiredness. However, if they continue for more than a week, the person might be depressed.
Symptoms can include intense anxiety, sleeplessness and lack of motivation. One person suffering from depression might have trouble sleeping while another has trouble doing anything but sleeping. Appetite can also be affected by depression. Some people will eat more to fill up the hole they feel inside themselves. Others will stop eating all together, having no appetite for anything.
One of the most severe signs of depression is a feeling of complete hopelessness. This usually occurs when a person is in a deep depression. This is extremely dangerous because this is when depressed people start having thoughts of suicide. If you hear someone start making references to not wanting to be around anymore or not having any purpose in life, you need to get them help. Untreated symptoms of depression can become life threatening.

Spray Tanning: An Interesting and Intimate Experience! By Amy Cummings
As I have grown older (and bigger) I have come to a conclusion: Fat looks better dark! Therefore, as summer gets closer, I am getting antsy about wearing my shorts (let alone bathing suit!). With all the dangers associated with tanning beds, I decided to try a spray tan. If you have never had a spray tan, live vicariously through me and then decide!
Step One: Call to ahead to schedule appointment. Decide when to go based on the time the store is least busy (as if everyone wont know that the tan is fake).
Step Two: The “Tanning Technician” tells me to exfoliate and not use any lotions or make-up.
Step Three: Decide to bathe right before the appointment. Exfoliate.
Step Four: Get out of Tub.
Step Five: Realize you have major HAIR (down and around places that will get spray tanned) and get back in tub.
Step Six: Shave places you can’t see. Become impressed my ability to stretch and bend like a pretzel. Wonder if there is enough hair to donate to “Locks of Love.”
Step Seven: Wonder if what my two-year-old daughter just witnessed will scar her for life.
Step Eight: Go without lotion or make-up to the tanning salon (resist urge to itch immediate shaving burn and feel new "hairless backside."
Step Nine: Act like I am not uncomfortable as I strip down to my thong undies. Feel good about the decision to shave (places down there).
Step Ten: Put on silly shower cap.
Step Eleven: Attempt not to make eye contact with "spray tan lady," as the actual act of spraying someone else naked is awkward enough.
Step Twelve: Silently clap inside as she doesn't not ask me to "bend over" to spray actual butt crack (the white crack tan line doesn't bother me!).
Step Thirteen: Wonder if the “Tanning Technician” thinks stretch marks and veins on my backside is an actual map.
Step Fourteen: Pretend that you don't notice has she has to go over your butt cheeks about 5 times (whereas every other area took once).
Step Fifteen: Pretend it isn't awkward as you life up your legs to ensure no "bikini line" tan lines.
Step Sixteen: Let the stuff dry. Get board at the time it takes to dry and dance in the mirror with shower cap on after the tanning lady leaves the room.
Step Seventeen: Go out of the tanning room and pretend that tanning girl and I are probably married in some countries (considering the things she has seen!)
Step Eighteen: Replace all the tanning solutions back on the shelves that my two year old has taken down.
Step Nineteen: Remove "palm tree" tanning stickers from my daughter’s hair (and other body parts).
Step Twenty: Look in the mirror and think again, "Yes, even fat looks better tanned!"
Step Twenty-One: Looks fabulous with a spray tan without the risk of the sun!
Step Twenty-Two: Tell everyone what an experience I had and certainly encourage them to go through the same things I had to!

St. Patrick’s Day is one of the most popular green holidays you can come across. This holiday came all the way from Ireland to celebrate, obviously, St. Patrick, the enemy of snakes everywhere. St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and is accredited with the conversion of Ireland over to Christianity during the second half of the 5th century. This is an unofficial holiday that is quite popular in the U.S. The first celebration in the U.S was held in Boston on 1737 by the Charitable Irish Society, later it came to New York in 1766 when a Irish soldiers marched through the city.
However, it came to be this is still a popular festival and luckily very easy to theme. The main thing to know is that everything must be green. Chicago even went so far as to dye its river green in celebration. Gold is a secondary color, but is to be used very sparingly. Three and Four leaf clovers are the symbol of choice for St. Patrick’s day so of course anything with clovers on it will also add to the theme. Most people seem to think that alcohol is an integral part of the celebration so expect any adults to be asking for some, mainly beer.
There are many things you can purchase to enhance your celebration, but the main things you should include in any party are paper products, cups, plates, napkins, utensils, table clothes, all of these can be purchased in a disposable format to make cleaning much easier and usually they can have an Irish theme to them. Other things you can purchase include green top hats, themed stickers, Green glow sticks, bracelets, necklaces, mugs, and of course beer mug shaped sunglass for novelties sake. The real problem is knowing what not to get, though that is up to you to decide.

Celtic Jewelry - A Beautiful Mystery Unraveled By Sam Serio
Celtic jewelry like the Celts themselves has a rich history and a proud tradition. Immensely beautiful with intricate Celtic symbols and delicate designs, Celtic cross jewelry, Celtic knot jewelry, and beautiful Claddaugh rings have been admired and desired for thousands of years.
Celtic Cross Jewelry
One of the most enduring, and coveted "gifts" of Celtic culture is jewelry featuring the Celtic Cross. According to Irish legend, St. Patrick created the first Celtic cross by drawing a circle over a Latin cross.
For an Irish Catholic, the circle in the Celtic cross may be a symbol of eternity and the endlessness of God's love. It can even represent a halo emanating from Christ.
Some say the four "arms" of the Celtic Cross represent the elements (fire, earth, air, and water). Others believe the cross denotes the four directions of the compass, and still others feel it is a representation of human existence - mind, body, soul and heart.
Celtic Knots
The most distinguishing characteristic of Celtic knots is their intricate patterns and design…and the debate as to the meaning of those designs. While it is unquestionable that many of the ancient designs had some significance, those meanings changed from tribe to tribe and location to location.
Many believe that the intricate looping in knots was a way to keep out evil spirits. It is also generally accepted that the looping Celtic knot design denotes eternity and interconnectedness. Still, there is no definitive guide as to the meaning of Celtic knots which, adds, perhaps to their mystery and appeal.
Claddagh Rings
Named for the town of Claddagh near Galway in which they are said to have originated, Claddagh rings are beloved Celtic symbols of Irish culture and sentiment. Unlike other Celtic symbols, the meaning behind the Claddagh ring is well-documented. The Claddagh design has a heart (symbolizing love) topped by a crown (symbolizing loyalty) held in two hands (signifying friendship). The phrase that is usually associated with the giving of a Claddagh ring is "Let love and friendship reign."
It's not surprise that the Claddagh is a popular marriage band. In Celtic times, it was worn on the right hand with the heart turned outward to show that the wearer is unattached or with the heart turned inward to show he/she was "spoken for." If the Claddagh ring is worn on the left hand with the heart turned inward, it shows that two loves have been joined in marriage.
Celtic Then and Now
At one time, Celtic people could be found throughout Eastern and Central Europe, as well as in the British Isles, where the earliest examples of Celtic jewelry originate. The emergence of the powerful Roman Empire encroached on the lifestyle, traditions, and homeland of the Celts who were forced to move to abandon their homes and relocate in remote areas in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and Cornwall in southern England.
Despite their hardships at the hands of the Romans, Celts endured, thrived…and continued to produce Celtic jewelry. The tradition has remained strong for centuries. Irish Celtic jewelry and Scottish Celtic jewelry have enjoyed a huge resurgence in their homelands and with "ex-pats" around the world, as people seek to rediscover and celebrate their cultural traditions.

Sometimes we get lucky: even in the deep of winter we often have brilliant sunny days. These bright days can make us feel better, but even a sunny winter day won't help us catch up with our vitamin D needs.
It is estimated that over half the US population is deficient in vitamin D. The more we learn about it, the more we realize how important vitamin D is, and that we get less of it than we think. We call it a vitamin but it is actually a hormone. Vitamins and minerals are found in the foods we eat; our primary source of vitamin D is the sun. Only a few foods have it naturally, and even then in small amounts.
Our vitamin D needs are met by sun and supplements, and we get less from the sun than we previously thought. We don't get any vitamin D from the sun in winter if we live north of San Fransisco (or Atlanta) or south of Sydney (or Buenos Aires). This means that any vitamin D that we get now is coming in supplemental form. People between those latitudes get some, but reduced levels depending on the angle of the sun.
How much is enough? The old recommended level of 400 IU per day is too low. Although there is not an official new recommendation yet, most experts recommend getting at least 1000 IU of vitamin D each day. Add up whatever you get from multivitamins, calcium pills and milk or other fortified foods. If you get less than 1000 IU from those sources combined, consider taking a vitamin D supplement to make up the difference.
There are good reasons to make sure we get adequate amounts of vitamin D. Researchers have long noticed that in winter more people are diagnosed with (or have worse symptoms of) Multiple Sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, diabetes and other autoimmune diseases. They think these diseases are worse in winter because our blood levels of vitamin D are lower. In winter the angle of the sun
limits or eliminates (depending on our latitude) the amount of vitamin we are able to absorb.
We have known for a long time that vitamin D is necessary for bone growth and density. Newer research is linking it to muscle growth, immune function, inflammation and cancer. Studies have shown that when vitamin D is given to elderly women, they use protein better and build more muscle. This translates into more strength and balance for tasks such as walking faster and getting out of a chair with more ease. Because vitamin D moderates the factors leading to inflammation, it seems to have a positive impact on diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. It even appears to limit the ability of cancer cells to spread.
Convinced? There doesn't seem to be much of a down side for supplementing with vitamin D. We used to think that the upper limit for safety was 2,000 IU/day. Now studies indicate that you could get as much as 10,000 IU without harmful effects, however I don't think it is wise to take high doses without checking with your physician. Consider getting tested for vitamin D with your next round of lab work. A daily dose of 1000 IU is considered standard, but a higher dose could be recommended to correct a deficiency. Check with your physician to get tested and for the dose best for you.

Many people wish to achieve that year-round tan, but for one reason or another, dislike the idea of visiting tanning salons. Perhaps it has to do with a busy schedule, or perhaps a person might prefer more privacy while they tan. For people who want the convenience of being able to tan whenever they wish in privacy, a home tanning bed is an interesting option.
What a Home Tanning Bed Requires
Before seriously looking into a home indoor tanning bed, there are several requirements to consider. These things include whether there is sufficient space in ones home for a home tanning bed, as well as the electrical and financial requirements of owning a home tanning bed.
A common problem is selecting a home tanning bed that is the right length, since many people end up buying one that is too small. In general, tanning beds are at least 6 feet long and will comfortably fit people who are 5’8” and under. However, for people who are taller than that, a home tanning bed that is 7 feet long would be the better choice.
If one owns a small apartment, chances are a home tanning bed will not be able to fit. These tanning beds are more suited for people with a room that can be specifically designated for that purpose. Home tanning beds can also be placed in the basement so that they are out of the way yet readily accessible. However, it is important to keep them securely shut when children are around as they may think they can play in them.
Home tanning beds run on electricity, but are not as complicated in that area as one might think. In fact, if one were to choose a simpler model of tanning bed, it would be the equivalent of powering a large lamp when it comes to electrical costs. However, to be on the safe side an electrician should check the designated power outlet.
Home tanning beds can be bought through various manufacturers, thus one should consult a local tanning salon for advice or search the internet for suitable websites. The price of owning a tanning bed is a large one, since the bed itself can cost several thousand dollars and the lamp bulbs will need to be replaced from time to time. However, for those who can afford it, a home tanning bed is indeed the most convenient way to tan.

St Patrick's Day Party Menu Ideas for a Rollicking St Patrick's Party By Gail Leino
St Patrick’s Day, celebrated on March 17th, is a day full of Irish customs. From green bread to Guinness, there are many items you can serve if you’re having a party. Here are a few ideas:
Most of the time, you will find an array of green items on the menu along with traditional Irish fare. Baked goods in particular lend themselves to being dyed green. To start off a menu you will need some traditional Irish beverages from Bailey’s Original Irish Cream to Irish coffee, and on to Irish Whisky. From the drinks you will move to Irish Breads including Irish Spice Bread, Irish Soda Bread, and Irish Wheaten Bread. The Irish dinners may include baked stuffed herring, Irish sausages, beef in Guinness, Irish stew and many other types of delicious food.
For a typical Irish stew you will need 2 pounds of lamb, 8 medium potatoes sliced and peeled, 3 Spanish onions, 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, 1 teaspoon of dried thyme, 2 cups water, salt and pepper to taste. Like any stew you will combine the ingredients in to a large pot with water and cook about an hour and a half.
Irish Scones are another great addition to the menu. You will need 1 cup of flour, ½ teaspoon baking powder, ¼ pound of butter softened, 2 ounces sugar, 1 egg, 2 ounces milk, and fruit or nuts to add to the scones. Mix the ingredients together with the dry goods mixed separately, and then added slowly to the egg mixture. Then place the scones in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes at a temperature of 350 degrees, making sure the scones are light brown when they come out. Serve them with butter, cream, jelly, honey or marmalade.
Whatever you choose to serve on St Patrick’s Day, traditional yet simple food often works best. That way, instead of being caught up worrying about the catering, you’ll be kicking up your heels with your guests.

Have a little "green" fun with the following activities your children are sure to enjoy.
Make Irish Toast - Simply get a piece of sliced bread and paint
shamrocks on it using a new, clean small tipped paintbrush and water mixed with green food coloring. Then pop it in the toaster and serve when lightly browned.
Make Shamrock Pancakes - Use a heart cookie cutter and cut 3 hearts out of the cooked pancake and form in a shamrock shape.
Make construction paper shamrocks - Cut 3 heart shapes out and arrange them in the shamrock shape and glue on construction paper. It is said that St Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the concept of the Trinity; which refers to the combination of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. This is said to be one reason for the strong association with St. Patrick's day and name.
Wear Green - This goes for parent and child.
Make Leprechaun Traps -give the children boxes, string, ribbons, tape, glue, sticks, wood and other craft materials to help them make a leprechaun trap have children set the traps before going to bed, then while they are sleeping you can leave gold wrapped chocolate coins or something else special in each childs trap.

(Seasonal Affective Disorder - Seasonal Depression & the Winter Blues).
The change in light exposure is the key to treating S.A.D. As your light exposure decreases in the fall and winter, the general consensus of the experts is that these changes in light exposure affect the body's natural rhythm and chemistry and induce Seasonal Affective Disorder. When S.A.D. lamp - Light Therapy Box is introduced, the majority of us will experience relief from S.A.D.

We have created most of the modern literature of this country. We have created the best of its political intelligence."
-- W. B. Yeats (1865–1939) speech in the Irish Senate, June 11, 1925

Who Was St. Patrick and Why Do We Celebrate His Life? By Niall Cinneide
St. Patrick’s Day is known as a day of celebration and festivities, but very few people know the true story of St. Patrick and who he really is. By tradition, he is a patron saint of the Catholic religion because of the captivity that he went through, the time of solitude and his great faith, and eventually the number of people that were converted to know God through him. It is legend that he heard angels and they helped him in his decisions. All in all, he is known as the patron saint of good luck and blessings to the Catholics in that era up until the 21st century.
St. Patrick was a real live person born in the time around 400 AD in Roman Britian, when the British Isles were still under the domain of the Romans. He was born with the name Maewyn. His name wasn’t changed until he was in the monastery. His father was a soldier in the army, and Patrick also reports him to be a deacon, civil official, and a town councilor, who was a son of a Romano-British priest. The family was Christian, but they weren’t extremely religious, some historians even say Patrick was agnostic in his childhood.
According to his most famous work, the Confessio, Patrick was captured along with many others when his village was attacked, and he was taken to Ireland as a slave. Patrick was under the authority of a druid high priest and his family and here he learned the native Celtic language which he later used to communicate, and help those to be converted.
After 8 years in captivity, he escaped at the age of twenty-two, and legend has it that an angel directed him to spend twelve years in a monastery near Paris, France, where he adopted the name Patrick. It was during this time of captivity that Patrick found God and developed the habit of praying throughout the day to strengthen himself and to be closer to God. It is recorded in the Confessio that he would often pray up to 100 times a day. One night, while in the monastery, he said he heard many voices that were calling him back to Ireland to help the remaining slaves. At this time he was somewhere in his mid thirties and so he answered the callings. He became one of the first Christian missionaries in Ireland.
He was confident in the Lord, and he journeyed far and wide, baptizing and confirming with untiring zeal. Indeed, Patrick was successful at converting Ireland to christianity . And he even made important converts even among the royal families. For 20 years he had travelled throughout Ireland, establishing monasteries, schools and churches, which would aid him in his conversions. He died on March 17th.
You can see how originally this was a Catholic holy day, but today St. Patrick's Day has evolved into more of a secular holiday. Or, rather, 'be Irish Day '. Speculation as to why this holiday is so popular could be the coming of spring that occurs within just a few days.
