New Year's Eve: Ring in the New Year!
By Gail Leino

Staying up until midnight on New Year’s Eve is a tried and true celebration. In fact, celebrating the New Year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon (actually the first visible crescent) after the Vernal Equinox (first day of spring).

The beginning of spring is a logical time to start a new year, because it is a season of rebirth, of planting new crops, and of blossoming. January first, on the other hand, has no astronomical or agricultural significance. It is purely arbitrary.

The Babylonian New Year celebration lasted for eleven days. Each day had its own particular mode of celebration, but it is safe to say that modern New Year's Eve festivities pale in comparison. The Romans continued to observe the New Year in late March, but their calendar was continually tampered with by various emperors, so it soon became out of synchronization with the sun.

In order to set the calendar right, the Roman senate, in 153 BC, declared January 1 to be the beginning of the new year, but tampering continued until Julius Caesar, in 46 BC, established what has come to be known as the Julian Calendar. It again established January 1 as the New Year, but in order to synchronize the calendar with the sun, Caesar had to let the previous year go on for 445 days.

Although in the first centuries AD the Romans continued celebrating the New Year, the early Catholic Church condemned the festivities as paganism. As Christianity became more widespread, the early church began having its own religious observances concurrently with many of the pagan celebrations, and New Year's Day was no different. New Years is still observed as the Feast of Christ's Circumcision by some denominations. During the Middle Ages, the Church remained opposed to celebrating New Years, and January first has been celebrated as a holiday by Western nations, for only about the past four hundred years.

20 Fun Free and Meaningful Things Every Student Can Do This Christmas Vacation
By Maria Pascucci

Winter break is FINALLY in sight and you couldn't be happier. Only problem is you have tons of free time coming up and you're b-r-o-k-e. Well, what student isn't? Did you know that the average college student is walking around with $2,700 in credit card debt! Instead of racking up pricey dinners and 3 a.m. nightcaps, movie stubs and concert tickets, grab your pals and give these free holiday pastimes a try. Your wallet will thank you. Your friends will too!

1. Careen down some hills on your old faithful sled. Bonus: Walking up the hill is great for the glutes.

2. Watch your favorite Christmas cartoons from your childhood like A Muppet Family Christmas and Frosty the Snowman. I still watch Christmas Eve on Sesame Street -- you're never too old for your favorite holiday cartoons!

3. Build a snowman.

4. Curl up beside a fire with hot chocolate.

5. Host a Pictionary tournament (winners get bragging rights till next year!).

6. Become a Big Brother or a Big Sister and mentor a child in need (visit http://www.bbbsa.org/).

7. Play hide and seek at night with your siblings under the glow of your neighbors' Christmas lights. No, you're not too "cool" for this once you're over 12.

8. Lie down in freshly fallen snow and make a snow angel.

9. Read The Night Before Christmas to your little cousin. Make sure to treat your little one to full special effects and don't forget to animate your voice. "Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

10. Start a snowball fight with your friends (just try not to make anyone's nose bleed).

11. Flip through old Christmas pictures with your parents and reminisce.

12. If you were lucky enough to have a tech-savvy family member while growing up, watch your old family videos. Make sure to invite your cousins over for this event for extra humiliation!

13. Decorate Mom's Christmas cutout cookies (just don't eat more than you frost and sprinkle).

14. SLEEP IN.

15. Attend your local high school's annual holiday concert.

16. Sing Christmas carols (even if it's only in the privacy of your own car).

17. For the brave: Round up your friends and sing carols around your neighborhood. There's nothing like the sound of people singing "Silent Night" outside your window to let you know you're not forgotten no matter how lonely you are or how bad things may seem.

18. Send out a personalized holiday e-card to all your friends & family.

19. Crafty? Make holiday cards and give them out to your loved ones when you see them throughout the holiday season. Inside the card, write down the top 5 things that make them special to you.

20. New Year's resolutions and to-do lists already dancing through your mind? Instead of listing your New Year's resolutions for 2007, write yourself a thank-you note for surviving 2006. List all the blessings you've received this year and write down everything you're proud to have accomplished. Make the New Year a time of reflection -- you deserve the break!

New Years Resolutions Tips - Top Tips for New Years Resolution Success
By Fabio Marciano

Without delay, let us get into the top new years resolutions tips to help you guarantee success this year. And the first tip is critical to your success:

Be Realistic: This is the thing that you absolutely must start out with. If you are not realistic about your new years resolution, you are setting yourself up for failure.

For instance, if your new years resolution is to lose 40 pounds in the next 3 months, that is a very big goal. Why not aim a little lower (say 20 pounds) and then when you reach that goal, set another.

Create a Plan: It's not enough to make a new years resolution on New Year's Eve and then wish for success in the new year. You have to think your resolution through and create a plan of attack. In fact, the earlier you start that plan, the better.

For instance, if you are trying to exercise more, create a workout schedule that is both realistic and easy to incorporate into your life. Even better, get a friend to workout with so you stick with your plan.

Tell Others About It: When you keep your resolution a secret, it is easy to just ignore it and not stick with it until you are successful. If you tell your friends and family members about it, they are not going to let you off the hook - they are going to ask about your progress and help motivate you to achieve your new years resolution.

Keep a Journal to Track Your Progress: When you write down your progress daily, it is easy to stay motivated and when you see your progress.

Sometimes you cannot see how much you have accomplished because you are weighing yourself daily or staring at that pile of bills, but by reviewing your journal, you will stay motivated because those small accomplishments will begin to pile up.

Do It For 21 Days Straight: Habits are formed after 21 days, which means that you have a higher likelihood of achieving your resolution if you do something toward your resolution for at least 21 days.

According to a recent survey of that looked at how people were keeping new years resolutions, the following is a breakdown of those how many resolutions are kept over time:

  • past the first week: 75%
  • past 2 weeks: 71%
  • after one month: 64%
  • after 6 months: 46%

As you can see, if you can keep it going for just 21 days, you will make it into that group of people who are sticking with their resolutions, while everyone else goes back to their same old self they have been wanting to change forever. Do NOT let that happen to you!

And if you do find yourself slipping up, take the next tip to heart...

Failure is Only Temporary: Expect and plan for setbacks. Sometimes when we're trying to do something new or change something about ourselves, we have a set back.

Do not let it de-motivate you or bring you down. Just charge ahead with that New Years Resolutions and pursue that goal of yours until you are successful. You need to go easy on yourself and try not to beat yourself up over the slip ups along the way. Just get back on the "horse" and charge ahead toward achieving your goal.

Have Fun and Celebrate: Resolutions are supposed to be something that you WANT to do, not HAVE to do so have some fun with it to stay motivated and you will find yourself wanting to exercise, eat less, pay down bad debt or do whatever your resolution is.

Celebrate by buying yourself something little that you have been wanting to buy or indulge in your favorite dessert if you have lost your first five pounds (just don't celebrate too much)!

In Summary The statistics say that only about 5 to 20 percent of us keep our New Year's resolutions (what number you believe depends on what source you look up). The biggest area of failures are around diet fitness resolutions.

Do not let the statistics stop you from pursuing a new years resolution this year. When you follow the above tips for new years resolutions, you will easily fall into the 20 percent of people who achieve their new years resolutions! I hope these tips for new years resolution success have helped. Now go take action on your resolution!

New Year's Eve Party Games - Welcome in the New Year With a Bang
By Gail Leino

Celebrating New Year is a way of reflecting on the year that has just passed, and looking forward towards the year ahead. If you’re marking the occasion with a celebration, here are a couple of New Year’s Eve party games to get you started:

‘The Year That Was…’ New Year’s Eve Party Game
This game is fun, and suitable for the quietest to the most fun-filled celebrations. Before the party, make up a list of 20 or so questions relating to world events, current affairs and pop culture from the previous year. These can be standard, true or false, multiple choice or “Who am I?” style questions. Guests gather together, and form teams of 2-4 people. One person is nominated to read the questions, and teams must try and answer as many correct as possible. The team with the highest score at the end of the game is the winner of this New Year's Eve party game.

‘My New Year’s Resolution…’ New Year’s Eve Party Game
This game is a great way for people who think they know each other to test how well they really know each other. At the start of the party, get all guests to write down 3 resolutions for the New Year. A few hours later, after the alcohol has well and truly started flowing, gather the guests together. Someone nominates to read out the resolutions and keep score, and the players must try and guess who each set of resolutions belongs to. The first person to call out the correct answer each time gets a point; the person with the most points at the end of the game is the winner of this great New Year's Eve party game.

Top 10 Financial Resolutions for the New Year
By Samantha Chang

With the new year just around the corner, most of us are thinking about the holidays and spending time with loved ones. And while Christmas and New Year's Eve are a time to eat, drink and be merry, reality usually sets in on New Year's Day, which leads to the traditional round of resolution-making.

So for the new year (in addition to eating better and exercising more), you might want to consider these 10 resolutions for putting your financial house in order.

1. Think Strategically About Your Money
When it comes to vacations, most people plan months ahead, carefully selecting a destination and the best way to get there. Financial decisions should involve the same type of strategic thinking. You should choose a financial "destination" and then map investment, savings, insurance and household needs to arrive as planned. People who think strategically will know if they're on track to reach their goals and when they need to adjust their plan to match their financial situations.

2. Develop Financial Relationships
It's never a good idea to make major decisions in a vacuum. Ideally, you should try to develop relationships with people who can help guide your financial well-being. Get to know them, and let them get to know you. That way, they're more likely to go the extra mile to provide the kind of personalized service that can keep your goals on track. A good accountant can help you save money. A banker can help with loans when you really need them, and a lawyer can make sure your personal affairs are in order.

3. Boost Savings, Cut Debt
Limiting debt is critical to reaching your financial goals. Therefore, it's important to keep nondeductible interest to a minimum. As you liquidate debt, you may want to direct those dollars to savings. You can also maximize your savings by contributing to company-sponsored tax-deductible savings programs such as a 401(k), a health savings account or a 529 college savings plan. You should also consider making major household purchases on a "pay-as-you-go" basis. Anytime you reduce debt, you are, in effect, giving yourself a raise.

4. Review Household Expenses and Set a Budget
Cash flow management is fundamental to financial planning. Basically, this means spending less than you earn. To do this, you should decide how much you want to save and then adjust your budget accordingly. Try tracking your expenses for three months so you know where your money is going. This way, it's easier to start making intelligent decisions about spending habits.

5. Plan Ahead for Marriage and Family
You may not have tied the knot yet, but if you do plan to marry someday, you should start planning now. For example, do you and your partner see eye-to-eye on financial matters? Do you know whether you'll use a joint checking account or separate accounts? How many children, if any, do you plan to have? How will a family change your insurance and housing needs? Financial arguments can frequently lead to divorce. By planning ahead, you can help minimize stress on your relationship.

6. Review Employment and Education Options
Too many people fail to take advantage of employee benefits, especially when it comes to retirement plans. Most companies match a portion of an employee's 401(k) contribution. Consider it "free money" or a guaranteed return on your investment. An increasing number of companies also match contributions to college and health savings accounts and provide tuition reimbursement. An advanced degree can enhance your earning potential, so find out if your company can help finance higher education.

7. Develop a Crisis Management Plan
A financial emergency usually strikes when you least expect it. The loss of a job, a change in your personal situation such as a divorce or a health crisis can quickly drain your financial reserves. The best hedge is an emergency savings account equal to at least three-and ideally, six-months of living expenses. Repay the account promptly, even if it means cutting back on other things. The goal is to avoid piling up debt-or worse, bankruptcy. A crisis management plan can provide some peace of mind and keep you moving toward your financial goals.

8. Review Insurance Needs
You can use insurance to protect your assets. Life insurance can provide a decent financial cushion in the event of a spouse's or partner's death. Therefore, it's important to regularly review your policies.

9. Leverage Your Assets
You can leverage assets to take advantage of financial opportunities. For example, if you have a low-interest mortgage, think about directing any extra cash to higher-paying investments rather than paying down the loan. A home equity loan is usually cheaper than a consumer loan, and interest is tax-deductible. If you have a brokerage account, you may want to consider using it as collateral for a loan. The interest may be lower than your investment return and conventional loan rates.

10. Manage Your Taxes
Taxes can take a huge bite out of income and capital gains, so you may want to consider the following steps:

--Maximize your and/or your spouse's 401(k) and IRA contributions.
--Consider opening a health savings account, even if you don't plan to use the money.
--If you own stock, consider selling it before the end of the year if it's generating losses.
--Think about increasing charitable contributions or setting up a trust.

These transactions can all yield tax deductions. By planning ahead and taking small steps now, you can start getting your finances in order by the start of the new year. Happy holidays!

New Year's Eve Party Secrets and Ideas
By Gail Leino

Some cultures have historically seen spring as a time of renewal but increasingly people today see New Years Eve in that perspective. It is certainly the beginning of the calendar year and marks the time when financial matters are settled. For lots of people it is occasion for resolving to embark on a course of self-improvement. Others just see it as time to start the arduous task of tax preparation. Neat-nicks take the opportunity to organize closets, garages and attics.

So whatever importance an individual places on New Years Eve it is never just another night. Whether wild street parties or expensive dinner reservations are made there is always something special before the clock strikes midnight. Many people spend New Years Eve quietly at home with a few friends or family members. Truth be told, these may in fact be the happiest revelers of all.

Expensive imported Champaign and platters of fancy meats may be standard fare but simpler foods can be just as appealing. Home buffets filled with bowls of chips or platters of inexpensive cold cuts are just as welcome and probably a better idea when budgets are still reeling from holiday gifting binges. Imported beers may be a nicer than usual treat that is still within budget constraints. These and wine coolers can eliminate the need to wash Champaign flutes afterward. Cans of juice or soda will help eliminate concerns about post party mishaps.

Decorating for New Years Eve is really a simple matter. If it glitters use it in your party decoration. Streamers and confetti in low light will turn any home into a more festive location. Fabric stores often have clearance priced yard goods from prom or Halloween that are reflective cloths and table toppers. Purchased New Years Eve paper party goods offer simple clean up.

New Year's Resolutions: Develop 10 Really Good Daily Habits
By Edi Sowers

“Good habits, which bring our lower passions and appetites under automatic control, leave our natures free to explore the larger experiences of life. Too many of us divide and dissipate our energies in debating actions which should be taken for granted.” – Ralph W. Sockman

Most of us have at least some habits that we know do not support our well-being and success. Experts say that in order to break a habit, you need to replace it with a different habit. So, let’s take out the habits that drain you, and add habits that give you energy! These things can be pleasurable things that nurture and restore you!

Here are some ideas to get you thinking (remember these daily habits will be different for everyone!):

  • Take a bubble bath
  • Go for a walk
  • Write in your journal
  • Write a thank you note
  • Call a friend
  • Do 10 minutes of stretching
  • Have lunch out under a tree instead of at your desk
  • Get to bed a half hour earlier
  • Wake up a half hour earlier
  • Brush your dog (or cat!)
  • The idea is not to add habits that you feel you SHOULD do - rather, to add habits that you would really LOVE to do because you know they will make you better able to enjoy life and do the things you must do!

Many people have a very difficult time with this. They are so stressed out and so guilt-ridden that they can’t imagine doing anything for themselves on a daily basis!

A couple of tips to integrate these new daily habits:

  • Develop some sort of visual reminder. Most of us are so busy with full lives, it is helpful to have some kind of daily reminder until the habit becomes just that - a habit!
  • Try adding just one of your 10 daily habits at a time. It's less overwhelming, and you'll likely experience greater success!
  • So, write down your list of 10 daily habits, and start enjoying yourself today!

Visit LifeHouse Coaching to sign up for "Blueprints for a Dream Life" and receive Edi Sowers' f*r*e*e* weekly articles, coaching tips, and special offers. The Secret Of Successful New Year's Resolutions
    By Jason Johns

With the New Year rapidly approaching, your thoughts will be turning to your New Years Resolutions. It's the time of year when you set your sights on the next year and decide what you want to achieve.

Are you planning on stopping smoking? Getting fitter? Losing a bit of weight or getting a new job?

These are a few of the perennial favourite New Years resolutions, though obviously, there are a lot more possible New Years resolutions.

When setting a New Years resolution, most people don't really spend a lot of time thinking about what they really want to achieve. You've probably heard people say something like, "I ought to stop smoking this year" or "I really should lose a bit of weight".

If you set resolutions like that, then you are setting yourself up for failure. You don't really want to achieve them, you just feel guilty and that you should do them bfor whatever reason.

The trouble is, unless you have some motivation and desire to achieve your resolutions, then you are not going to achieve them. It is absolutely vital that you pick New Years resolutions that you really want to achieve and then follow through on them with action.

Before the New Year happens, sit and think about your New Years Resolutions. What do you want to achieve next year? When you know this, then you can spend some time working out an action plan to make sure you can achieve it. If you want to stop smoking, get some help whether this is a stop smoking CD or a visit to a clinical hypnotist or even nicotine patches. If you wnat to lose weight, sign up for an exercise class, get some hypnosis programs to help or start a diet.

Without action you will fail at your New Years resolution. You deserve to succeed at them! So let's summarise with a quick checklist:

    1) Decide upon your New Years resolutions

3 Secrets to Increasing Traffic in the New Year
    By Scott Patterson

Now that 2008 has arrived, it is the habit of many people to make a resolution for the New Year. While many people focus on self-improvement, some opt to make resolutions about their business. Usually this involves a resolution to increase their revenue for their online business.

But did you know that it is actually quite easy to increase your online revenue?

The trick is to drive more traffic to your Internet business(es). As you know by now, more traffic generally means more money.

No matter what type of site you have, your success hinges on getting as much traffic as possible. But like many online business owners, you have probably exhausted many sources for increasing traffic.

Recently I have found three incredible ways to drive more traffic to your site. The good news is that all these methods are not being done by many webmasters.

So if you want to increase traffic for 2008, be sure to use each of the following three traffic-building mechanisms:

    1- Data Feeds

Do you like the idea of creating hundreds, even thousand of pages of legitimate content?

With a data feed, this is possible.

Many online businesses utilize data feeds as a way to help their affiliates. If you are not familiar with this concept, a data feed is file that contains a list of products, descriptions and prices for individual items that are sold by a company.

With a data feed, you can create a specific content page for each product. So if an affiliate program has thousands of products, then you can create thousands of pages of quality content. As you probably know, the more content usually leads to more traffic.

Data feeds are great for getting natural search engine traffic because they list specific products that people are looking for. If you can find a data feed that is related to your specific website, then you can easily generate more natural traffic for your online business.

    2- Viral eBooks

Another tool that can dramatically increase your website traffic is a viral ebook or report. Most of the time, a viral ebook is a PDF that people send to their contacts, which contains your marketing message. It is called viral because every person that receives the ebook is given a reason to pass along your material.

Before starting a viral marketing campaign, it is important to create a reason why people will want to pass along your marketing message. Some of the best reasons can include simple greed or a desire to provide entertaining information to their friends. If you can develop a hook that will take advantage of either of these, then it will be easy to create a successful viral marketing campaign.

What I usually do is create a special 5 to 10 page report on a specific topic. Then I find an affiliate program that is related to the topic. Then I create a mechanism where people can easily brand this ebook with their own affiliate link.

This type of viral ebook is valuable because you can place a mini advertisement or sponsorship on every copy. In addition, you can let the reader know that he or she can make money by offering this viral ebook. As a result, there is a chance that every person that reads the book will click over to your site.

    3-Blogs

By now, you have probably heard about the power of blogs. If you haven’t created one, then you should use the New Year to take advantage of this traffic pulling tool.

With blogs, you are providing your audience with fresh new content about your topic. People love to read them, because most blogs contain new information in an entertaining and easy-to-read format.

The best part about blogs is how much they are valued by search engines. The majority of search engines consider any information on a blog to be important current news, so they pay special attention to articles listed there. As a result, you can use blogs to drive a larger portion of traffic to your Internet business.

For 2006 you should make a resolution to get more traffic to your site. By implementing these three tools into your marketing mix, you will discover that your web traffic (and income) will dramatically increase.

Scott J. Patterson is a self proclaimed Dunce, yet in a recent month he earned $12,124 from one of his online businesses. To find out how YOU can do the same, download his free ebook - A Secret Guide to Online Businesses.
