The efficacy of an indoor tanning session depends a lot on the tanning lamps used. The lamps are the main source of tanning in the tanning beds that provide the accurate amount of UV rays. The UV rays stimulate the melanin cells for the production of melanin.
The amplitude of UV rays by the lamps help in the quality tan. The lamps are the most important equipment in a tanning booth. That's why its essential to know for sure certain facts about the lamps. There are numerous kinds of tanning bulbs but the features make them extraordinary. Do you know how these bulbs produce the ultraviolet radiations?
The lamps emit UV rays due to the collision of the electrons from the electrode and the electrons from the mercury atom. The settling of the mercury electrons from excited state to normal state produces the radiations. The UV radiations then pass the phosphorus coated glass and give out the accurate level needed for the tanning.
So before buying a tanning bed or a facial tanner, consider following facts about the lamps:
1.Prefer those bulbs with lower UVB outlet, because they will create a darker tan that will last long. A higher UVB bulb though tans faster but the tan is not so darker.
2.See that the beds are equipped with bronzing bulbs having a lower level of UVB. Bronzing bulbs are different from the 'hot' bulbs in the sense that the 'hot' tanning bulbs have a higher level of UVB and less UVA.
3.Generally the tanning bed bulbs are approved for 1000 hours for use, but it will be better if you change them after 600-800 hours of use for good results.
For maximizing the life of your tanning bulbs make sure the beds are getting appropriate amount of voltage. Check the efficiency of cooling system fans because too much of heat reduces the quality of the lamp.

With more and more of us understanding the serious consequences of suntanning, we are looking for alternatives. Remember the first self tanners that hit the shelves many years ago – wella you became instant carrot orange. Well we’ve come along way babe! The hottest thing to hit the beauty seen is “spray tanning.”
Spray tan in a can is the latest in sunless tanning technology. Forget lotions or pump sprays that leave uneven tones. Although lotions have come along way from the carrot orange days, some can still leave you with orange under tones. Aerosol tanning sprays can leave you with a perfect looking, no hassle, even tan.
Spray tan in a can is the safest, easiest way to get a perfect sunless tan at home! No more harmful UV rays or trips to the tanning bed.
You will want to find a reputable shop. Ask around, word of mouth is always a good way to find out what salon does the best spray tanning. Once you’ve chosen a salon book your appointment.
If your planning to have a spray tan for a special event, say like your wedding, then I would suggest a trial run about a month prior. If you like the results you can book again, if you don’t then I suggest trying another salon.
On the day of your appointment shower and exfoliate. Use a loofah and shower gel and body scrub to remove all your dry/dead skin. This will ensure an even application.
At the salon they will give you instructions, often these instructions are in the form of the video. The whole procedure and what you need to do will be explained to you.
Some important things to remember:
hold your breath when the spray is going off (for about 14 seconds and its very challenging)
follow the instructions “exactly” as to where to apply the lotion to block the spray on your feet and hands. You need to block the spray from your hands and feet because these areas have excess wrinkles and creases, so if they are sprayed you will get a tell-tale white veiny looking areas in the creases.
when the spray stops you need to turn around
when you leave the spray booth you will be given towels to wipe down and remove any excess spray. Make sure you wipe not blot.
The color from your spray tan will last anywhere from 7-10 days. The treatments are still a bit on the pricey side at around $40.00 a treatment, so this isn’t something you get done on a regular basis, more like a treat or for a special occasion. Some companies sell packages that give you a reduced rate.
It is important to apply plenty of moisturizer on a regular basis to the extent the life of your Spray on Sun Tan. If you have very dry skin use a deep moisturizer. Blend any moisturizer into the skin and do not wipe it off as this will remove some of your spray tan.
Baths, spas and swimming in chlorinated pools will reduce the life of your tan.
Tips for spray tanning...
All the spray tanning in the world will do you no good if it attaches itself to dead skin that is about to come off your body so be sure to Exfoliate! Use a loofah sponge in the bath the night before you spray tan session to remove these dead skin cells.
Choose your clothes carefully. Pick clothes that cover all the parts of your body you won’t be tanning. Select tight fitting clothes so that the tan spray cannot go under your sleeves. Choose dark colored clothes, since spray tanners will stain clothing.
Follow the instructions! Provided by the Salon. Self-tanning booths typically have a handout, so read up, and make sure you know what to do!
For 30-60 seconds after a self-tanning booth application you need to Stand still. This will ensure that your tan dries evenly. Although it does take longer than 30 seconds for your spray tan to dry completely, the first minute or more is when you run a real risk of rubbing off the self-tanner before it has a chance to work.
After your spray tan application you will need to Blot your skin with a towel to catch any drips.
Because your feet normally get less sun than the rest of you, your feet are paler and may get dark faster, so it is important to Protect your feet. If you are spraying yourself, go lightly on the feet. If you are using a salon use the paper booties that are provided to protect your feet. You can later apply a self tanner to your feet to give them the appropriate amount of color.
If you’ve got a special event coming up, perhaps a wedding, prom, or a re-union, spray tanning might be something you’ll want to try. When done correctly it results in a very natural looking tan adding summer color to your pale winter skin.

President’s Day Interesting Facts: Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln By Gail Leino
This holiday of President’s Day originated to offer special recognition to President George Washington, America’s first President, but would soon come to encompass a broader meaning in recognition for Abraham Lincoln and great leaders elect of our nation.
The date of recognition was chosen to commemorate the birthday of George Washington which was February 11th of 1731 according to the Julian calendar. Britain shifted to the use of the Gregorian calendar and so shifted everyone’s birthday by jumping ahead the sum of 11 days, which now left George Washington with the new birthday celebration on February 22 and gave a new date to President’s Day. In 1885 President Chester Arthur signed a bill declaring George Washington’s birthday of February 22nd a federal holiday.
This date confusion was only a minor glitch and easily compensated for until Abraham Lincoln came along; another great president in deserving of recognition and as luck would have it another February birthday as well. Although Lincoln’s birthday was never to be declared a federal holiday, it did become recognized as one of significance at the state level where many of the governments observed February 12th as a legal holiday.
In 1968, a bill was passed to change several of the federal holidays to make things a bit easier on the calendar schedules of federal employee’s observance of holidays. Moving several of the declared holidays to the Mondays of a specific week, three day weekends promote easier schedule accommodations for the observance. In the case of President’s Day observance, it is held on the third Monday of the February calendar.
We refer to this holiday as President’s Day to honor both presidents but officially it still remains to be called Washington’s Birthday. Congress rejected the proposal to change the recognition to President’s Day which is ironic as it always tends to fall after Lincoln’s birthday and before Washington’s. Confusion surrounding the official name change of the holiday caused quite a stir; many leaders believe Lincoln was short-changed while others believe all presidents are deserving of recognition.

Mardi Gras Beads: What Is The Tradition? By Gail Leino
When you think about Mardi Gras, you don’t think about some of the traditions that are a part of the celebration like Mardi Gras beads. In fact, how many people even know the symbolism behind the beads? It takes some research for most people to understand why certain things are done and why they are traditional parts of the Mardi Gras celebration.
For over a century it has been a tradition for those in the parade to throw out beads or other trinkets to any spectator shouting the phrase, “Throw me something, mister.” It may seem like a small symbolism to be sure, but the tradition has endured for over a century, and will likely endure for another one. Sometimes it is not beads but trinkets or doubloons, which are coins in the size of a silver dollar. The beads are actually plastic necklaces in different colors, shapes, and sizes that represent jewelry royalty would wear.
In addition to beads and doubloons, cups are sometimes tossed to the spectator yelling the famous phrase. The cups bear the Krewes emblem as well as the theme for that year’s celebration. Don’t think that you cannot have your own celebration because you’re not having a parade in order to follow the tradition. You can have a mini-parade or you can have a drawing or play a game with the winner becoming the recipient of the beads, doubloon, or cup.
If you don’t know where to find what you need for your own Mardi Gras party, your local party store should be able to direct you. If you don’t have a party store in your area or one that carries Mardi Gras supplies, an online search will provide websites where you can find all of the supplies you need for your Mardi Gras celebration.

Do you love your tanned skin and go to a tanning salon often? Then you may consider owing a home tanning bed instead. There are many benefits to getting artificial tan at home rather than in a salon, but there are disadvantages as well. Find out if getting a tanning bed for home use is right for you.
Home tanning beds benefits
First and most important is convenience and the time you will save. How many times did you think that you should go to the salon to fix your tan, but felt like it is too much trouble or you are too tired? It is also a hassle, making appointments and waiting for a vacant tanning bed.
If you have a home tanning bed, you don't have to make appointments, drive anywhere or wait for anything. You can pop in it at any time, even late at night.
Time is not the only thing you will save. Tanning at home comes out cheaper, than going to a tanning salon regularly. Of course, a residential tanning bed is a large investment, but it will last you for years and in the long term you will spend less, than if you were going to a salon.
Another advantage of having your own tanning bed is that you don't have to worry about who was using it before you. Of course, UV rays kills most bacteria and salons are required to clean their tanning beds after each use, but how can you be a 100 percent sure? It is better if only you and members of your family can use your tanning bed.
Types of tanning beds for home use
There are two main types of tanning beds - traditional shell style beds and stand up tanning beds. Both are suitable for use at home. Vertical beds give you a more even tan, because you can more while tanning. There is no pressure points when you stand up rather than lie down in the bed, this contributes to more even tan too. Also vertical tanning beds use more powerful lights, so it takes less time to achieve desired tan.
If you are not sure which style you like better, try them both in a tanning salon. It really is a matter of personal preference, some people like stand up beds, others prefer traditional style.
Buying a Home Tanning Bed - What You Need to Consider
There is one disadvantage of having a tanning bed at home - it consumes tons of energy. You will have to give it a secure plug point. Also be prepared for your energy bill to increase.
Another thing to consider is the space. Tanning beds are large and bulky, do you have enough extra room to put your new tanning bed to? Stand up beds take slightly less space than horizontal tanning beds, but still you will need some space for it. When selecting a home tanning bed makes sure you notice its dimensions and take measurements at home.
Maintaining Your Residential Tanning Bed
Tanning beds don't require much maintenance. You will have to clean it with a special tanning bed cleaner once in a while. The only thing you should do regularly is to replace the bulbs. Tanning bed bulbs lose power with time and become less efficient. With an old lamp it takes twice as long to get the desired tan. So you will have to replace your lamps often.
Tanning can be dangerous - avoid health risks!
When using a tanning bed at home it is easy to get districted and to lose truck of time. For this reason it is best to buy a tanning bed with a timer. This way you don't damage your skin by tanning for too long.
You should always use a tanning lotion while tanning and afterwards. Lotion will protect your skin from damage that UV rays can do and also hydrate it.
Having a home tanning bed is a great time saver for regular tanners. Weight all pros and cons, and if you have enough room and can afford it get yourself a tanning bed. You won't regret it!
There is much more to home tanning beds and selecting the right one for your place. Find additional tanning bed tips and information at Tanning Beds Guide

Mardi Gras: Tradition and Celebration By Gail Leino
Whether you live in New Orleans, or elsewhere, Mardi Gras can be celebrated.
Considering present day Mardi Gras celebrations, it might surprise you to learn that the festival has religious roots. Festivities start in New Orleans each year on January 6, the Twelfth Night feast of the Epiphany, and the day it is believed the three kings first visited Jesus Christ. Mardi Gras, French for ‘Fat Tuesday’, is the day-long highlight of Mardi Gras. While Mardi Gras most certainly has pagan, pre-Christian origins, the Roman Catholic Church legitimized the festival as a brief celebration before Lent. Mardi Gras Day, a legal holiday in New Orleans, is set to occur 46 days (the 40 days of Lent plus six Sundays) Before Easter, and can come as early as February 3 or as late as March 9.
The celebration of Mardi Gras included private masked balls, and random street masking, in the cities of Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans. By the 1820s, maskers on foot, and in decorated carriages, began to appear on Fat Tuesday, and in 1837, the first documented procession took place in New Orleans, but it bore no resemblance to today's carnival.
Just like a Mardi Gras Ball, your party should have a theme. Each person can choose to be masked or unmasked, but bright colors, beads, and Jazz music is a must! One popular suggestion for Mardi Gras parties outside of New Orleans, is to enlist the aid of someone artistically inclined to paint a large piece of plywood to coordinate with the Mardi Gras theme, where each couple can stand to have their photo taken as a gift and memento of the party, just like they do at the Mardi Gras balls in New Orleans!
Decorating for your Mardi Gras Party is very easy. Strings of brightly colored lights (Christmas tree lights work well) plenty of glittery, colorful confetti, helium balloons will round out the Mardi Gras theme.
Serve traditional Mardi Gras foods and drinks like crawfish, seafood, boudan, jambalaya, gumbo, red beans and rice, moon pies, King Cake, Mardi Gras Margaritas, dips and chips. We are planning on playing Mardi Gras related jazz, zydeco and dance music during the event. A song every Mardi Gras celebration should have is “Mardi Gras Mambo" by Buckwheat Zydeco!

Seasonal Affective Disorder and Tanning Salons by: Mimi Richardson
With the arrival of the cold season, besides cold-driven nuisance, some persons experience drawbacks regarding the general state, lack of energy and depression of unknown origin. It was scientifically ascertained that the lack of light favors the production of melatonin by the pineal gland, a hormone inducing sleep. That is why, during the cold seasons when days are shorter and the sunlight is scarce, we often feel sleepy or drowsy. Also, even during spring and summer, if the tendency is to keep most of the time indoors at home or at the office, the effect may be similar, though not as severe.
Well, if drowsiness were the only impact generated by season changes, things would be easier to solve (with a little coffee maybe!). The problem is that melatonin secretion is synchronized with the production of a neurotransmitter, serotonin, which is involved in several physiological processes such as temperature, blood-pressure regulation and in neuropsychological functions such as appetite, memory and mood. The two do not work together at the same time. When melatonin is secreted, serotonin production is inhibited. Lack of serotonin causes disorders such as chronic fatigue syndrome and reflects its effects on mood also, triggering depression in some persons.
Melatonin is active at night and serotonin is active in the daytime. Also, there is the age factor that contributes to the balance of the two chemicals: the secretion of melatonin decreases with age. There has been established that the link between serotonin and melatonin along with their dependence on the body clock may explain the depression experienced by the people suffering from the disorder called Seasonal Affective Disorder - SAD. Depression, sleep problems, weight gain, anxiety, joint pain, irritability, stress, headaches are some of the symptoms that may appear when we suffer from SAD.
The problem is primarily caused by the lack of sunlight. It has been scientifically proven that sunlight favors increase in serotonin levels and favors vitamin D accumulation. Besides having anti-osteoporotic, immunomodulatory, anticarcinogenic, antipsoriatic, antioxidant properties, vitamin D is also a mood-modulator.
UV rays exposure favors vitamin D synthesis in the skin. That is why persons who go to tanning salons have noticed mood improvement and keep the habit in order to maintain the state of well-being. However, it is common knowledge that the effects of the UV exposure are not always the most desirable ones. If going to tanning salons becomes a habit, then recurrent, prolonged UV exposure may result in consequences such as premature skin aging and eventually skin cancer.
Light therapy represents a way to treat SAD. Light operates on the body in two ways: through skin impact or by entering your eyes. Only UV light has effects on the skin, while the light that has effects by entering your eyes needs not be UV, it just has to be bright. Its energizing effect comes from the fact that it stimulates the production of serotonin. The simplest way to get enough bright light is to spend an hour a day or more outdoors, where the light levels range from 1,000 to 50,000 lux or more, compared to room lighting, which is about 50-200 lux.
If your schedule or the weather does not permit it, an alternative is to purchase a light therapy device. For optimum effects, the light source either has to be very bright - 5,000 lux or more - or it has to be in a particular spectrum - around 460 nanometers, which is in the blue range. According to new research, blue range light will provide benefits even if at a dimmer level. Most companies producing light bulbs make full spectrum lights that may successfully replace sunlight.
Yet, there are side effects that bright artificial light may induce, namely it may interfere with sleep (especially when exposure is made in the evening hours) or even trigger in some people a mania - condition called "bipolar disorder" (known as manic depression).
The safest remains the natural outdoor light, on condition that UV protection is used.

President's Day is celebrated on the third Monday in February, and this year it falls on February 18, 2008. To celebrate President's Day, I've collected some of my favorite leadership quotes from US Presidents.
The leaders of this country have had some extraordinary obstacles to overcome and they've had to rise to meet many challenges. They have left little bits of wisdom along the way I hope you'll find interesting.
So here are some of my favorite leadership quotes from US Presidents:
1. "Patience and perseverance have a magical affect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish." - John Quincy Adams
2. "Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort." - Franklin D. Roosevelt
3. "I not only use all the brains that I have, but all that I can borrow." - Woodrow Wilson

Commerce was never meant to be at odds with congress or even juxtaposed with it. But Presidents Day, it seems, like other special holidays has gone the way of all flesh. Even as a boy I remember questioning how the Birth of a Savior could be overtaken by the notion of a fat little benevolent man who comes bearing gifts. How did the celebration of a risen Savior get replaced with a candy egg bearing bunny? How are the hopes of a new year brought in by ending the old one in a drunken stupor? These questions don’t need to be answered as much as pondered. The answers are largely understood, knowing how to back out of our clearly cuckoo behavior is not.
Would George Washington be glad to know that we have found a way to honor his work in the founding of this country by making deals on an invention he could not have imagined in his own time? Perhaps he might be let down by the fact that Lincoln at least got a car named after him. But where is the new Dodge George Washington four wheel drive SUV?
Lincoln was known for many things but not one of them could be remotely connected to the sales of automobiles. How is it that automobiles got connected to him? Hasn’t anyone noticed that a fleet of Lincoln Continentals cannot compare even marginally to the great character and legacy that Lincoln left to us all?
Lincoln said “Intelligence, patriotism Christianity and a firm reliance are still competent to adjust, in the best way, all our present difficulty.” Was he remiss or did he forget to add the part about a good deal on a car?
It was said that Lincoln was more like a spirit than a man. He was the only president who not only was unafraid to use God in his speeches but he actually referred to Jesus Christ as well. He was well known for the many failures in his life. They all seemed to prepare him for the one great success which was even more than his presidency but the preservation of the union itself.
Well known was Lincoln’s ability to defuse a hot situation and bring peace and harmony where there was discord. His more down home quality may have been the ability to split logs to make rail fences and he was very good at that it is said. One lesser known talent was banjo picking and singing old folk ditties. Even these proclivities can’t be thought of as anything resembling barking for the sale of a people moving buggy.
In my grammar school days we were told the story of how Lincoln walked five miles back to the merchant who gave him too much change. He returned a penny. Judging from the pennies I see on supermarket floors and parking lots, I’d say people wouldn’t even bother to bend over to pick up a penny today. Some say this story may not be true at all. I say that if anyone might have done it that way it was probably Abraham Lincoln.
Being a good student is scoffed at in today’s schools. Trying to be kind is thought of as weakness in the land of extreme sports and blood fights. And renowned men of old whose character and deeds are legendary are insulted by our indifference.
Is the final insult to replace or supplant all repose to them in any fashion with the super sale of the latest stuff out of Detroit? By our indifference to the presidents both in practice and in the halls of academia perhaps we should heed the warnings of Lincoln who said “The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next.”
