Christmas And The Origin Of Santa Claus
By Nick Oliva

Have you always wondered how Christmas and Santa Claus or St. Nick ever came to be linked within the same holiday? Here's a short story on the subject.

The Dutch began the legend of Saint Nicholas, in fact Santa Claus comes from the pronunciation of Sint Nikolass. As the myth and story goes, he was a bishop in the early part of 300 AD. The color of the cloak of his hierarchy became the fur trimmed red suit that our Jolly Old Man with the white beard now wears outside of each Wal Mart. The legend has it that he saved three daughters of a pauper from a forced life of prostitution by throwing a bag of gold coins through a window of the man who kidnapped them for his evil purposes, as a dowry for each woman. That act of kindness set them free to return to their father. The story made its way through the country and I'm sure there are many variations on it. On his feast day December sixth, the custom of giving gifts in remembrance of his unselfish act began long after he died. Now you know how a Dutch ritual became a worldwide phenomena.

One never knows how things that we do end up in mythological ways as to be metamorphosized in such a worldwide celebration. Random acts of kindness pay huge dividends perhaps not to the originator but the "paying it forward" of such deeds is what we all should strive for not just during the holiday season, but every day. Imagine that, Christmas everyday!

Nick Oliva (O-lee-va') has been a musician, composer, photographer, an audio engineer, an Entertainment Director and Technical Director for over twenty-five years and is a successful self-made money manager. He lives in the mountains outside of Las Vegas.

Christmas Bells and the History Behind Them
By Tina Porter

Christmas Bells are an integral part of the traditional holiday celebration. They can be seen and heard, in one way or another, just about anywhere you go during the Christmas season. We hear Carols merrily singing about silver bells, sleigh bells, and jingle bells from the loud speakers at shopping malls, restaurants, and even doctor's offices etc. We see images of all different shapes and sizes of bells plastered on gift paper, greeting cards, and shop windows. There are even bell shaped tree ornaments, candy dishes, and decorations. How did bells become such an important part of the Christmas celebration?

The pagans initially used bells as a way to ward off evil spirits during the autumn and winter months. It was thought that making loud noises would keep evil spirits at bay during the night. Bells were readily available to almost everyone so they were ideal for use as noisemakers.

Eventually bells went from being used to ward off evil to being used as a way to celebrate happy occasions, a tradition that took hold and that we still use today. Churches would ring them every time something good happened, such as a wedding or a birth, especially the birth of Jesus Christ. The children would also ring their bells to honor his birth.

Many people could not afford musical instruments during that time because they were so expensive. Bells were a great alternative to these expensive musical instruments because they were inexpensive, easy to make, and almost everyone had them. People used them when they went Christmas caroling because of their beautiful musical sounds. Many people would take bells to church with them to use during church services.

When the stories of Santa started to emerge, we saw that his eight reindeer wore several small bells, called jingle bells. It was rumored that when the reindeer moved the bells would jingle which made it easier for Santa to find his way through the dark, snow, or fog. That is, of course, until Rudolph the came into the picture.

It is amazing how many different ways we use bells today, especially during the holiday season. For many, Christmas bells are a way to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. For others, they are a beautiful symbol of a warm, happy time of year. Either way, they have become a integral part of our traditional Christmas time celebrations.

Christmas Stockings - Hang Your Christmas Stocking
By Bill Clarke

Every year about this time, I start thinking about the pleasure of filling up Christmas Stockings for my kids. With a wife who lovingly purchases gifts for most every other occasion, filling up the Christmas Stockings became my job early in our marriage, and I loved doing it. Sometime in October, I'd get started picking stocking stuffers for my children, my wife, and yes, even myself.

Those first stocking stuffers don't necessarily have anything to do with Christmas, little statues and decorating items that remind me of each person, along my travels. My daughter gets a lot of angels in her stocking, and my son receives a lot of little cars, even though he's old enough to be driving them. Small make-up kits, wire games, mini-tool kits, and sewing kits, have been stuffed into the toes of stockings since the children were young. There's always a pair of gloves, some socks, and a personal item or two that just happens to fit each child.

Their stockings are big enough for me to stash a few books, a favorite movie, a subscription to their favorite magazine, or a coupon to favorite restaurants, for special private time with dear old dad.

As they get a little older, each has received a new set of car keys in their stocking, key rings, a wallet, and most recently a cell phone. One winter, my daughter wanted to visit a friend over Christmas vacation, so I wrapped airline tickets and the keys to a new set of luggage to stash in her stocking.

Stockings get fillers of candy canes, chocolate kisses, coffee and tea bags, or special treats that only I would know about, or be able to find. But the most important thing I ever put in a stocking is all my love for each of my wonderful children.

If you're looking for stocking stuffers, I have a deal for you.

Do You Need A Cheap Christmas Present?
By Leanne King

I love Christmas. I love the fact that it is the one time of year that everyone makes an effort to be nice to one another. I love the decorations, the food but most of all - just like a big kid - I love the Christmas presents.

Santa and I have not had a good relationship over the years at our house. Over the years Santa has sometimes failed to turn up or misunderstood my letter asking for a pony and brought me a school uniform instead! I was hoping that it would be different this year but I've already been told that Santa's Workshop has had to make budget cuts.

This means my Santa is going to be looking for a stack of cheap Christmas presents. Cheap does not necessarily have to be nasty though. You can get a lot of great presents for Christmas for very little money. Some of the ideas for cheap Christmas presents that spring to mind are, of course, anything home made. If you like to bake you will be able to wow your friends and relatives with your treats from the kitchen. If you are more of a take out type of person you can always buy some cookies and make a beautiful decorated package out of them. These type of gifts do not have to come from gourmet food shops. You can buy these cheap Christmas presents at your supermarket or discount shop. Let's face it, once anything is wrapped up with ribbon it all looks good.

Coming soon. If there is one holiday that I really love and look forward to, it's Christmas. Christmas for me, is all about, eggnog, snow, yummy food, holiday cheer and the excitement that the opening of presents brings. There is one part of Christmas that is a bit of a downer though - the spending! No matter, how much I have set aside for Christmas or think that I need it always comes as a shock when the wallet is empty and the shopping is half done. Are you ready to go out and purchase all of those Christmas gifts for your family and friends? No doubt they can get a bit pricey for you as well at times. Maybe this year you need to consider some cheap Christmas presents to pass out. Remember, cheap doesn't have to be mean nasty.

Another idea is to give a gift of your time. All you need to do for this cheap Christmas present is think of something that the receiver would like to save time on. It could be babysitting, washing the car, ironing .... All you need to do then is go to the computer and make a coupon for the gift of time you are going to give.

My favourite cheap Christmas present when Santa is feeling pinched is to buy wine. What I do, is buy a case of my favourite wine (it works out cheaper in bulk) and then tizz up a bottle with ribbons and a customised tag for each person. Most people love wine and they will appreciate that you are sharing your favourite tipple with them.

The most important thing to remember about Christmas is that it is not about the Christmas gifts. The best thing about Christmas is that you are enjoying the day with people that you love and care for. So, don't worry if you have to buy a cheap Christmas present this year. Just enjoy Christmas day with your loved ones, that is the greatest gift you can give.

Swedish Christmas Cookies - A Recipe To Make Pepparkakor
By Holly Hallberg

Christmas is a special time in Scandinavia and Sweden in particular. Tradition and Heritage are extremely important to Swedish culture and there are many traditions which are widely upheld. In most traditional Swedish homes, the smell of home baked foods and desserts fill the air at Christmas time. The Swedes really love to cook and for many, the holiday season and the Christmas Eve celebration is the highlight of their year.

One recipe, which is very popular in Sweden, is for a cookie called the Pepparkakor.

Pepparkakor, literally translated, means "pepper cookies" but I've yet to see a recipe that included any pepper. They are similar to the American gingersnap cookie but they are generally thinner, crisper and smoother in texture.

Many refer to this cookie as a "ginger thin" and they are commonly called "gingernuts" in the United Kingdom. Besides their great taste, pepparkakor cookies are used as Christmas decorations as well. They are frequently shaped like little men or women, pigs, hearts or goats. If left round, they are decorated with frosting to give them more character.

Using a drinking straw, you can create a small hole in the pepparkakor cookie prior to baking. After the cookie has cooled, tie the cookie to the Christmas tree with a beautiful white or red colored ribbon.

Swedish Christmas Cookies or Pepparkakor

Makes 2-3 dozen cookies (depending on shape/size)

Ingredients:

1/4 cup molasses

3/4 cup white sugar

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

8 ounces butter

2/3 cup water

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

2 teaspoons ground ginger

1 teaspoon ground cloves

1 egg

1 tablespoon light (or dark) corn syrup

3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking soda

Preparation:

The dough should be well-chilled before baking. You can either start a day early and chill overnight, or start preparing 1-2 hours before the cookies will be needed.

In a heavy pot, combine the molasses, sugars, spices and water. Turn the heat up and bring the mixture to a boil while stirring frequently.

Add the butter to the mixture (in pads or chunks) and remove the pot from the heat. Continue stirring the mixture until the butter has melted and the mixture is uniform in consistency. Pour the hot mixture into a large mixing bowl. In another bowl, combine the flour, corn syrup, egg and baking soda and whisk until well-blended. Combine with the hot mixture and stir until the dough has formed. Place the dough on a lightly floured board and knead for 1-2 minutes. Wrap the dough in waxed paper and chill until the dough is firm (1-2 hours or overnight).

On a lightly floured board, roll the dough out to about 1/8 inch in thickness (the thinner, the crisper) and either cut into shapes or make round cookies about 2 inches in diameter. Put the cookies on a lightly greased cookie sheet.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and bake for 8-10 minutes until they are golden brown. Remove the cookie sheet from the oven and place them on a wire rack to cool.

About the only thing left to do is to enjoy these fabulous Swedish Christmas cookies with the ones you love... Enjoy!

The Christmas Flower - The Poinsettia
By Tina Porter

The Poinsettia is considered to be the official Christmas flower of the United States. Their tendency to bloom during the early winter months combined with their vivid red, star shaped leaves, make them the ideal Christmas plant. Surprisingly, until just a couple of centuries ago the Poinsettia did not even exist in the United States.

The Poinsettia, originally known as Flores de Noche Buena (Flowers of the Holy Night), is a plant that is originally a native of the highlands of Central America. Ancient Aztecs used the milky sap (latex) from the Poinsettia to treat fevers brought on by illness. They also used the red leaves from the plant to create a purple colored dye that was used to color makeup, fabric and clothe.

If it were not for Dr. Joel Poinsette, the Poinsettia may never have become a part of the American Christmas tradition. Besides being the first Mexican ambassador to the United States, Poinsette was also an amateur botanist. During a trip to Mexico in 1825, he noticed the beautiful red plants growing wild and he could not resist bringing some home to South Carolina with him. The plants flourished so well under his care that he was able to reproduce enough of them to give them to his friends as well as several different botanical gardens. Eventually, the plant could found be growing wild all across the United States. The Flores de Noche Buena later adopted the English name Poinsettia in honor of Dr Joel Poinsette.

Paul Ecke Sr. is credited with establishing the first potted Poinsettia that could be grown indoors. He liked the plant so much that he wanted to make it a living symbol of Christmas. He sold the plant to people all across the United States making his vision a success. He was so successful that he became the largest producer of the Poinsettia in the world. In fact, over 90% of the Poinsettias sold in the world today come from the Paul Ecke ranch in California.

As with any Christmas icon, there is a legend that ties the Poinsettia with Christianity. This legend tells of a poor little girl and her cousin who were going to church to see the nativity. The little girl was sad because she did not have a present for the baby Jesus. Her cousin convinced her that a bouquet of weeds picked from the roadside would be the perfect gift for him because it was a humble gift. When she approached the church alter, the bouquet of weeds turned into the beautiful red flowers that we now know as the Poinsettia.

Since its introduction to the United States 1825, the Poinsettia has become the most popular plant during the Christmas Season. Each year, there are more than 70 million Poinsettias sold in the United States alone. The Poinsettia even has a day named after it. Poinsettia Day is December 12, marking the date that Dr. Joel Poinsette died.

Also, if you sell on eBay or plan to in the future, OneSource is a great place to find wholesalers and drop shippers for your eBay auctions.

And the big reason you should become a member of OneSource today is that wholesalers have begun offering steep discounts on their products. They are trying to get inventory out of their warehouses before the end of the year, so they won't have to pay taxes on the inventory.

That rarely happens this time of year.

But, with the combination of the housing and mortgage market, the low consumer confidence index and wholesalers overestimating retail sales, wholesalers are looking for a way to liquidate goods immediately.

It's a great opportunity to stock up on items to sell right now and for the first quarter of 2008. But you need to take advantage of this now.

This window of opportunity closes on December 31st, 2007.

Great Christmas Gifts for the Boss
By Jeffrey Meier

Finding the perfect gift for your boss can take you down many different paths. You don't want to look like your trying to get on his best side, but then again you want to show your appreciation throughout the year. This sometimes leaves you a dilemma on which gift to choose for your boss. We have put together a list of things that should solve your problem and keep you in good graces with everyone else.

Bosses are usually people who dine out a lot because of the position that they are in. One item that they can always use is restaurant gift cards. These can be used instead of cash and you know that your boss will use these. Where most gifts may just lie on his or her desk these will most definitely be redeem. The best part about this gift is they can use it when they want as most don't expire until a year later which makes a difference. Always check how long they are good before you purchase so you don't give a gift that expires before they can actually use them.

Many people love to give cheeses and meats as gifts to their bosses. In today's world these are still very smart gift ideas. People love food and they can keep these at the office and munch on them while others aren't looking. Other ideas are a gift basket of food made up of various items that can be consumed easily. Such items could include pretzels, crackers, cheese, are just some of the items to consider.

Most bosses especially males are into sports and one idea that has worked well over the years are framed posters. Find out what and who they love in sports and pick up a framed poster to give them. You will be surprised how well they will like gifts such as these. Of course if they aren't into sports give them a gift certificate and they can actually pick out the one they want. This way you are guaranteed it is something that they will appreciate.

Of course there are many small gifts that work just as well, one of those being wine. It seems more often this is a popular choice as entertaining is big with bosses especially ones who always seem busy doing work in the office. Another item that many people overlook as a gift that works well is these calendars that have interesting quotes on. Each day they just toss the previous day away and an interesting quote pops up. These calendars are low cost and come in all kinds of sizes and designs.

When buying gifts for bosses, you must consider many things. The more though you know about your bosses likes and dislikes will help you choose the best gift possible. One important key is take your time and don't just grab the first gift so you can get it over with. Think about it before making any purchase and you should be fine. The key is doing rush yourself and you will have the perfect gift to give.
